Studies Show CBD and Other Cannabinoids Prevent Covid-19 Infection
I couldn’t be happier to reignite this blog with this news! If you have ever doubted the powerful properties of hemp and all the goodness it offers, then you will want to read on.
In the past few weeks, the results of two studies were released showing that CBD prevents SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, from infecting cells and that two other hemp derived cannabinoids, CBDA and CBGA, bind to the spikes of the Covid-19 virus, also preventing infection into cells. MIC DROP!
These studies come out of the University of Chicago and Oregon State University. I have always known, from my own research and my own personal experience that hemp oil and the compounds it contains are remarkable for our health and well being. But this news is proof positive and even goes beyond my personal expectations. Cannabinoids Block Cellular Entry of SARS-Co V-2 and the Emerging Variants was published on January 10 in the Journal of Natural Products.
The study was led by Richard van Breeman and found that the cannabinoids CBDA and CBGA, commonly found in hemp, bind to the spike protein of SARS-Co V-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. The spike is how the virus pieces and infiltrate the cell and by binding to the spike, these two compounds prevent the virus from infecting the cell.
CBDA and CBGA are basically the precursors to CBD and CBG and are among over 100 different cannabinoids found in hemp and cannabis. When we extract these two compounds from the hemp plant, typically labs will decarb the oil through heat; this refers to decarboxylation, a chemical reaction that removes a carboxyl group. It turns CBDA into CBD, CBGA into CBG and THCA into THC (and so on). To make this more simple to understand, this process is also what happens when someone smokes cannabis. For example, if you eat a cannabis bud, you would get fiber and some nutrients but you wouldn’t feel an effect. But by lighting it with fire and inhaling, you decarb the oils and will create THC or CBD, thereby creating a high or a relaxing effect, respectively.
CBDA and CBGA are not easy to find in finished products. They are often extracted from the plant and then decarbed to create CBD or CBG. While we know there is therapeutic value in all of the one hundred plus cannabinoids found in hemp, they are still being studied considering how restricted the cannabis and hemp industry have been. But rest assured, you will be seeing these products pop up! Watch out for a new tincture from CBD Fountain with CBDA and CBGA!

CBD also offers fabulous potential as a treatment to future variants.
How much to take? The study showed that the more CBD the study mice received, the better their outcomes. And as we know, there are no side effects or possibilities of overdose with CBD. 25 mg is the “average adult dose”, but some people need more. Do check with your doctor if you are on other medications, there are a few meds that compete in the liver for enzymes.
